On the edge of the lake, beyond the lily pads quivering from the passage of hidden fish, as the buoy bell echoed distantly in the grey stillness, the eagle ruffled his feathers and closed his eyes and I thought of the ocean, of the river otter passing beneath the waves, and of the long breath of calm that followed. We spent an adventurous Anniversary unexpectedly hiking four and a half miles through the forest, being chased by a hornet that attacked and stung my wife, reading our vows at sunset as the sploosh of waves and a lone seal witnessed, and then having a sumptuous meal together before heading home tired and happy.
